Rotating Dancer going both directions at once?

See link for animated graphic:

Some view her rotating clockwise, some counter-clockwise; you can even see her going back-and-forth if you concentrate.

However, in the physical world she would only be going in one specific direction.

I know it’s an optical illusion – but is it mainly because how our brain interprets the image since we realize it should be 3D but is on a 2D plane and we’re missing information?

In other words, would this illusion work for a real dancer in a studio and not a 2D silhouette.?

If you were far enough away so that binocular and perspective cues don’t work to tell you what’s “front” and what’s “back”, and if the lighting was as it is here (say the dancer is behind a gauze screen, and the only light is directly behind her, so all you see is a silhouette) – then yes, it could work.

In a more typical situation with front lighting there will be obvious visual cues that tell you which way she’s turning. Think about how this would NOT work if we could see her face. If you see her eyes, lips, etc., crossing your field of view from your left to your right, your brain is not going to be able to confuse that view with the back of her head. Similarly the pony tail is only visible when she’s turned away from you.

(To make the dancer switch direction, focus on her extended leg. As it moves say from left to right in front of her, then when it reaches the extreme, just tell yourself that it’s now moving from right to left, while still staying in front of her. Think about what that would look like in this image and sort of mentally “pull” the leg in the other direction. If you work at it you can make her switch back and forth after each 180, never completing a turn. Trippy!

If you still have trouble, don’t feel bad – I can’t see those “magic eye” (autostereogram) things to save my life.)
