What are those red lights for on the back of a ramp meter for a highway?
I’ve seen ramp meters for freeway on ramps where there’s a red light on the back of the ramp meter facing toward the freeway. It shines red when the meter is on.
It’s called an indicator light or “Rat Light”. Law enforcement uses it to catch drivers blowing through the meter without stopping. When the meter is on the green light phase the indicator light will be off. When the meter is on the red light phase, the light on the back of the meter will light up letting the officer know that the drivers are facing a red light. If someone passed the meter without stopping and the officer can see that the indicator light is on, they will stop them and give them a ticket for running a red light.
The city I worked in had these on some of the major intersections as well so we could do red light enforcement at intersections where we had a large number of collision caused by people running red lights.
