Intel Atom Processor Differences

How can I speed up my laptops?
I have two laptops: a 3-year old Lenovo Thinkpad T60 with an Intel T2400 processor and 1GB of RAM (expandable to 4GB).and a 1-year old MSI Wind 100 with an Intel Atom N270 processor and 1 GB of RAM (expandable to 2GB). They both run ok but both slow down quite a bit when I run multiple applications (especially large databases of 300+MB).
Would adding RAM to either of these laptops make a difference in terms of multi-tasking speed and would it be worth spending roughly $100 to get the Thinkpad upgraded to 4GB?
I realize that in the long run I should buy a new laptop but right now I don’t have the money and time.
Thanks.
More RAM certainly wouldn’t hurt. The netbook is never going to be a speed demon with multiple apps at once (but you probably already know that).
