Regarding dogs, can someone tell me the difference between the CGC test and becoming Delta certified?
I know the steps to the CGC test. Once my dog passes, does that even mean anything? How is becoming Delta certified different? Once Delta certified, the dog can be a therapy dog, correct?
What a CGC certificate means is that you might qualify for a reduced rate in your insurance premiums (for having proof you have a well behaved dog unlikely to bite anyone) and that if your landlord has objections to dogs or if you want in future to move someplace where they don’t allow dogs or don’t allow dogs like yours, a CGC certificate can sometimes turn the tide and convince the landlord to make an exception in your case. What it also means to you is that your dog has been independently evaluated and found to be suitable for walking around the neighborhood and having around people and other pets. It can be hard to be brutally honest in evaluating one’s own pet, and if you don’t have the experience with reading dogs you might not be able to recognize problems that aren’t obvious that an expert might see.
Delta doesn’t certify therapy dogs. They register them. As a condition of registration, dog/human teams are required to take tests to prove they are suitable for the program. Once the tests are passed and membership fees paid, the team are registered for therapy visits and assigned a mentor to take them to their first few visits and coach them through it all. They also get liability insurance under Delta which is a very good thing to have.
There’s a written test for you over the material covered in the handbook. You should take a Delta therapy dog class before signing up for the test and get a copy of that book and familiarize yourself with it. The Delta test is harder and more involved than the CGC test. The CGC test explores how your dog reacts in ordinary pet-type situations. The therapy dog test takes it a step further and explores how your dog reacts in the types of situations and settings he might encounter while making therapy visits.

Some facilities will allow you to do therapy visits with just a CGC. However, it is in your best interest to go ahead and get the Delta registration with liability insurance. Remember that it is always up to the facility to decide whether to permit therapy visits and whom to permit. Some facilities will only accept teams from specific organizations. So if you have a special place you want to visit, check with them and find out what they require before you sign up for any tests. Who knows, they might prefer TDI over Delta.
