How do i find the right processor to upgrade my laptop?

I have an old laptop, and it’s a Dell (Inspiron) ME051. I’ve been wanting to upgrade the RAM and get a new processor. I’ve already found the right RAM model to upgrade with, but I’m having trouble finding the right processor. In the laptop right now is an Intel Celeron 1.6 GHz processor. I know that this is an old laptop, but I am eventually getting a new one soon. I wanted to upgrade the RAM and the processor because i want to experiment with this laptop once i get a new one, and this laptop also has my itunes on it so i have to keep it. So if anyone could help me find or point me in the right direction to a new processor i would gladly appreciate it!

Yes, you can upgrade the processor. It just isn’t worth the cost or hassle.

The trick is looking up your laptop specs: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1300/en/om/om_en.pdf and seeing what processors were offered with that laptop. If that doesn’t work, you look at the chipset and figure out which processors are compatible with the chipset and hope.

Bottom line for your ME051 is that it will only support Celeron M and Pentium M processors – which max out at IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® M Processor 780 (2M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 533 MHz FSB). ANY modern dual core processor laptop will run rings around that Pentium M, so your best bet is to simply buy a new laptop.
