Will I need a HDMI 1.4 cable to watch full HD 3D blu-ray movies on my PS3?

Besides a 3D Full HD TV set, 3D glasses and the 3.5 firmware update for PS3, will I also need an HDMI 1.4 cable to watch 3D blu-ray movies in full HD? Does PS3 support HDMI 1.4?

No, your current HDMI cables should work fine. Cnet tested the PS3 with the 3D update: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20017116-1.html . They wrote:

“It’s also worth noting that, as with all of our previous 3D testing, we used standard HDMI cables we had onhand already; no new cables were required to pass 3D over HDMI.”

Also, the 3D output from the PS3 was 1080p, not 1080i:

“For our test we hooked up our PS3 Slim to a number of 3D TVs in our TV test lab… In each case the PS3 delivered what was, as far as we can tell by eye and the TVs’ status indicators and menus, Full HD 3D, aka 1080p to each eye via the frame-packing format used by Blu-ray. Images appeared as sharp as we expected, without the softer look characteristic of half-resolution broadcast 3D, from DirecTV for example.”

The PS3 is able to output 3D in 1080p, because the hardware is advanced enough (and can be firmware updated) to support the 3D protocol over its HDMI 1.3 port: http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/full-hd-1080p-3d-tv-from-hdmi-1-3.shtml . Unfortunately the audio in 3D Blu-ray mode is limited to Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, so no master quality 7.1 audio will be supported for 3D.
