If you’re ok with buying games rather than browser/download, I recommend Guild Wars. You have to buy the game in retail, but it’s ftp. It’s extremely well balanced, and deviates from traditional MMOs in that grind is never really a necessity (but the option is there if you want to). There are several GW titles…all except for Eye of the North are stand-alones that merge with each other. So you don’t have to play the original title first if you don’t want to. Only Eye of the North is an expansion pack (meaning you need a previous game to play it).
Guild Wars 2, a whole new game, is due out at some point next year.
