Computer science and geology or geophysics?

I am considering going back to school to finish my geology degree, and branching out to combine my knowledge of programming (I’m a 3D graphics programmer) with my love of geology. My question is basically how viable is the combination? I have ~10 years of programming experience, but will I struggle to find a well paying job if I switched to geology? I would like to focus on data modeling/exploration techniques.

Any geologist have any thoughts? =)

This is a VERY VERY viable combination. Presently in the O&G industry we are looking for profile like you to program 3D geomodelling tools.
For your info, just look at http://www.slb.com/content/services/software/geo/petrel/simulation.asp?

It will give you a good idea of what people are using.
